Ôpetajate Maja (Teachers’ House) stands right in the middle of Tallinn in Raekoja plats (Town Hall Square). Together with the surrounding buildings it has been in the centre of events for the last seven centuries- a dwelling for wealthy merchants and a residence for the town council in the Middle Ages, a centre for the Baltic Sea fleet of Tsarist Russia in the 18th century, the chair of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Estonia in 1918 and until 1940 officers' club and casino where fancy balls and receptions took place.
About 60 years the Teachers' House has operated as a cultural and educational centre under various names. The historical atmosphere and neoclassical interior make it also a popular venue for conferences, banquets, weddings, birthday celebrations and exhibitions with about 50.000 visitors a year.
The visitor can look out of the window and see the famous Christmas market below or in summer the countless outdoor cafés and restaurants. Raekoja plats is a bustling square all the year round.
The Teachers' House is a perfect place to take a break in, breathe in the atmosphere of bygone times and enjoy the art shown in the gallery.Past shows: Different but Together in Tallinn
